Inspired by true stories from Vietnamese communities in Europe, the international feature film project Beyond the Broken Bridge portrays the journey of rediscovering identity, family, and homeland among those who have grown up far from their motherland.

On June 11 in Hanoi, the production team officially introduced the international feature film project Beyond the Broken Bridge. The film is being developed by a team of filmmakers from Vietnam and Germany, with the goal of telling the stories of Vietnamese communities around the world through the language of contemporary cinema.

The film is inspired by true stories from Vietnamese communities in Germany and several other European countries. The story revolves around Dan, a young man who has grown up between two cultures and constantly wrestles with questions about family, personal identity, and his connection to his homeland.

Returning to Vietnam to learn about his family roots and his own past, Dan is confronted with generational divides, unresolved emotional wounds, and a journey to find an answer to a profound question: Where do I truly belong?

Producer Angie Do stated that the film’s cast will bring together domestic actors, Vietnamese-origin artists working abroad, and a number of international performers. The project is currently in the casting phase.

Notably, Aaron Le, a German actor of Vietnamese descent, serves as the film’s lead producer while also portraying the main character, Dan. Through a global distribution network and participation in international film festivals, the production team hopes the film will reach a wide audience beyond Vietnam.

According to the project’s international filmmaking team, the idea for the film originated from a desire to bring the stories of Vietnamese communities around the world to the big screen.

“Many immigrant communities around the world already have cinematic works that reflect their journeys, cultures, and unique identities. Meanwhile, the stories of overseas Vietnamese have yet to be explored to the same extent through the lens of international cinema,” the filmmaking team shared.

The filmmaking team stated that the project was developed with the spirit of connecting Vietnam with the world, linking the past with the present, reconnecting families with their roots, and strengthening the bonds between Vietnamese people at home and Vietnamese communities across the globe.

The film explores themes of family, memory, cultural identity, and the journey of rediscovering one’s roots among Vietnamese people living far from their homeland. According to the production team, it is also a story of healing and self-discovery, following individuals who carry a deep longing for their homeland while searching for meaning and a sense of belonging.

The film is expected to be set across locations in both Vietnam and Europe. A significant portion of the production will take place in Vietnam, with the aim of introducing the country’s landscapes, culture, and everyday life to international audiences.

The production team brings together creative professionals from Vietnam and Germany, including Angie Do, Aaron Le, Kristina Schippling, and Zhong To.

According to the production schedule, Beyond the Broken Bridge will enter its initial stages of production in 2026 and complete post-production in 2027 before participating in international film festivals and being released to wider audiences.
